Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee! / E’en though it be a
cross the raiseth me, / Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to Thee, /
Nearer, my God, to Thee, / Nearer to Thee!

This
morning’s prayer and meditation for Sally’s healing comes from Take Heart, Oh God: Riches from the Greatest
Christian Women Writers of All Time.
We
long for nearness to God. What does it feel like? What happens when we are near God?
First
we must ask how we can be near God. The answer is in the beloved hymn itself: E’en though it be a cross that raiseth me.
We come near to God because of what Jesus did for us on the cross. His death
allows us—sinful human beings—to approach the Holy God.
And
oh what joy that nearness brings. When we draw near to God, he is beside us,
within us, before us, behind us. His very closeness brings us protection,
peace, and safety. Like a young child reaching for her mother’s hand, nearness
to God means his hand reaches down to grasp ours.
Such
nearness is a gift from Jesus to you. Such nearness offers you joy and peace
beyond imagining. Let your song always be, “Nearer, my God, to Thee.”
Prayer
for Meditation
Lord, I long to be close. Draw me
nearer to you.
Scripture
for Meditation
For the law never made anything perfect. But
now we have confidence in a better hope, through which we draw near to God. Hebrews 7:19
