His exhausted, futile travelers, losing the way, falling in the dark, struggling on again, will ultimately get there . . . It is an immense hope and is the gift of faith.

~~Elizabeth Goudge

This morning’s prayer and meditation for Sally’s healing comes from Take Heart, Oh God: Riches from the Greatest Christian Women Writers of All Time.
We find ourselves sidetracked and turned around many times: choosing things of the world over God; filled up with pride over achievements; waiting until we are desperately in need and only then turning to him. As Elizabeth Goudge puts it, we fall and fall again.
Our reassurance is from Jesus, who came for sinners such as us. When we repent and set out again on the journey home, he will give us strength. He shines a light in the darkness.
The spiritual journey requires a habitual effort to put God first in our lives. When we do this, the world loses its appeal. God’s love is so great, so awe-inspiring, and so graciously given to sinners, that all else pales in comparison.
Persevere in virtue. Then when you fall, Jesus stretches forth his hand to pick you up and set you on the path again.
You’ll get there. He promises.
Prayer for Meditation
Lord Jesus, I’m tired and often sidetracked. Hold my hand. Guide me.
Scripture for Meditation
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne. Think of all the hostility he endured from sinful people; then you won’t become weary and give up. Hebrews 12:1-3
