When one really cares, the self is forgotten, and the sacrifice becomes only a part of the activity

When one really cares, the self is forgotten, and the sacrifice becomes only a part of the activity.

~~Dorothy Sayers

This morning’s prayer and meditation for Sally’s healing comes from Take Heart, Oh God: Riches from the Greatest Christian Women Writers of All Time.
Sometimes we care—and want to help—but it’s too inconvenient. We’d take that meal, but the family lives too far away. We’d contribute to the offering, but our finances are tight. We’d volunteer, but our schedule is filled to capacity.
Dorothy Sayers explains that, when we really care, we don’t focus on ourselves and the sacrifice we must make. The sacrifice becomes only a part of the activity; the rest is wrapped up in love for God, love for others, and desire to serve.
We just need to learn to forget about ourselves. Not easy, but possible.
Today, tune your heart to the Holy Spirit’s gentle voice. Is he asking you to really care? Don’t do something because you feel manipulated, pressured, or guilty. Do it out of willing obedience to him.
When you forget about yourself, your acts of service overflow with joy and love. And God in heaven smiles.
Prayer for Meditation
Even through sacrifice, Jesus, help me forget myself and do as you ask.
Scripture for Meditation
And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. Romans 12:1
