Lord, help me listen so that I hear your best answers to my requests.

It is not enough to pray for answers
if we are too stubborn to listen to what the Lord is telling us.

~~Allison Bottke

This morning’s prayer and meditation for Sally’s healing comes from Take Heart, Oh God: Riches from the Greatest Christian Women Writers of All Time.
As a milestone event approaches, we shop for a new dress. We know exactly what we want or else we search until we find the perfect one. No sales clerk can change our minds. We know what we want.
How often do we petition God with the same determination? We know our needs and we know exactly how we want them to be met. We know what he should provide for us, when he should provide it, or how he should deal with that person who hurt us. We aren’t ready to hear another alternative. We may not recognize when God sends a friend or a Scripture to soften our hearts in order to hear him. If we’re too stubborn to listen to what God is saying, we miss his perfect answers.
Listen with an open heart. God’s answers may surprise you.
Prayer for Meditation
Lord, help me listen so that I hear your best answers to my requests.
Scripture for Meditation
My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. John 10:27

I’m diving into your word, Lord, I want to learn more about you.

To receive any deep, inward profit from the Scripture you must . . . plunge into the very depths of the words you read until revelation, like a sweet aroma, breaks out upon you.

~~Madame Guyon

This morning’s prayer and meditation for Sally’s healing comes from Take Heart, Oh God: Riches from the Greatest Christian Women Writers of All Time.
The Bible can seem, like a very scary book. We crack open the pages and hope to read something we can understand, let alone gain some insight and encouragement for life today.

Madame Guyon would say, dive in. Plunge to the very depths of the words. Let them surround you, wash over you. Because it is living and active, God’s Word makes its way into your heart. Like the sweet aroma rising from freshly baked bread, the revelation will rise out of the pages. It will shine a light into your darkness.
Light exposes everything, good and bad. When you can see, you can clean away the cobwebs in your life. God’s Word will describe how God’s holiness can pour over you and rid your life of unhealthy relationships and destructive addictions. The brilliance of his Word burns away the shadows.
It all starts when you open your Bible.
Prayer for Meditation
I’m diving into your word, Lord, I want to learn more about you.
Scripture for Meditation
For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edge sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. Hebrews 4:12

Father, I need to find rest in you

We need to find God, and He cannot be found in noise and restlessness.
God is the friend of silence.

~~Mother Teresa

This morning’s prayer and meditation for Sally’s healing comes from Take Heart, Oh God: Riches from the Greatest Christian Women Writers of All Time.
Prayer can be confusing, intimidating, and misunderstood. But it wasn’t that way for Mother Teresa. For her, it was a matter of just sitting silently before her loving heavenly Father.
We too are invited to sit in an intimate place of stillness. God knows our fear and pain as he gazes on us. We know his power and love as we gaze back at him. Nothing has changed, yet everything has changed.
Most have never experienced prayer that way. We dash into God’s presence with a gigantic list of needs and wants. By spending that time being seen and known, we are able to lay down the stuff we carried in and leave knowing it is being handled. We may choose to pick it up later, but that will be our choice.
Today, gaze at your Savior. Rest all of your cares with the One who gazes back at you.

Prayer for Meditation
Father, I need to find rest in you. Help me to come boldly and sit.
Scripture for Meditation – Psalm 27:4
The one thing I ask of the Lord—
The thing I see most—
Is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,
Delighting in the Lord’s perfections
And meditating in his Temple.

Lord, help me to talk less and listen more

This practice of listening to God has increased my intimacy
with Him more than any other spiritual discipline.

~~Sarah Young

This morning’s prayer and meditation for Sally’s healing comes from Take Heart, Oh God: Riches from the Greatest Christian Women Writers of All Time.
Sit for a minute and just listen. What do you hear? The gurgle of the coffee maker. The sizzle of food simmering on the stove. Snatches of your daughter’s phone conversation down the hall. The deep pulse of the bass from a cranked-up stereo in a passing car.
Our world is filled with sounds, both pleasant and unpleasant. It is not an easy task to hear God’s voice amidst all the other noises. As Sarah Young says, it takes practice and discipline. That means it’s going to take a little work on our part. It may mean finding that quiet place with few distractions. It means opening the Bible and reading God’s Word. It means intentionally listening for God’s voice.
Such intimacy with God! How wonderful that God would choose to speak to us if we would only hear. Close your eyes and listen. What is God saying to your today?
Prayer for Meditation
Lord, help me to talk less and listen more. I want to know you better.
Scripture for Meditation
Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make, Oh, that you would choose life, that you and your descendants might live! Choose to love the Lord you God and to obey him and commit yourself to him, for he is your life. Then you will live long in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Deuteronomy 30:19-20

An Excellent Guide

This morning’s prayer and meditation for Sally’s healing comes from Moments of Peace for the Morning: Inspirational Thoughts and Prayers to Begin Your Day.
If you desire to be taught this morning—you are willing to accept God’s counsel and acknowledge it as superior to your own—then you fulfill the requirements for him to lead you.
As chaplain Thomas Goodwin wrote, “The Lord will teach the humble his secrets, he will not teach proud scholars.”
God speaks to your listening soul, showing you his ways step by step. He leads you in an adventure of discovery and understanding, and he sets a purposeful course that brings him glory and you satisfaction.
It is good that you have humbled yourself to God this morning. Listen to him, and he will share his most excellent secrets with you.
Prayer for Meditation
Dear God, I want your counsel and acknowledge that your wisdom is far greater than my own. Teach me your magnificent ways. Amen.
Scripture for Meditation
He leads the humble in what is right, and the humble He teaches His way. Psalm 25:9
Lead me by your truth and teach me, for you are the God who saves me. All day long I put my hope in you. Psalm 25:5
